Lesson in Class, Lesson in Life by Bienvinido - August 2013 Scholarship Essay

“One must live for purpose, because a person without a sense of purpose is merely a depraved meandering corpse. Furthermore, a person must live by a moral code and a set of virtues, for a person with no defining significance is simply a theoretical representation of unsung yearnings and of renounced success and is an abomination to the meaning of existence. These are the essence of the interdependence and of the mutual existence of both mind and body. These are what constitute a person with great values. Brilliant mean, such as Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, and Martin Luther King Jr., lived and died for these principles and, through their inspiring speeches and compelling writings, they expect you to do the same. Live up to the dreams that your great predecessors fought for, the dreams that they never ceased to pursue even as they breathe their last breath on their deathbeds. Do not make the same mistakes that countless humans commit every day, the mistakes that were never atoned for. Free yourself from any irrational materialistic attachments you made in this world and realize your true potential to succeed and conquer any difficulties. Observe, question, learn, apply, endure, analyze, and repeat. Life is short; do not waste it; make the most of it.” Such were the words of my high school teacher as our class came to an end during the last day of school.
His words have an ever-lasting impact on my life. He made me realize that my dream to become an engineer can be fulfilled. He made me realize that I have the capacity to achieve my goals, if I learn to question and apply what I learned and persist. It is his words that continue to provoke my inner strength to succeed through difficult and trying times, and it is his words that I would continue to carry in my mind as I battle through school, social, and internal challenges. Forever would his words be firmly implanted in my mind as I persevere through life’s struggles and inspire others to do the same.
