Finding the right career for me by Betsabe - June 2017 Scholarship Essay

Kevin Brooks once said, “It’s hard to think about growing up when you’re right in the middle of doing it. It’s hard to know what you want. Sometimes there are so many voices in your head it’s difficult to know which of them is yours.” Reading this quote I can relate it to my life. My six year old self was very hyper and I loved doing what others did. Ignoring that all of the ideas at that age were coming from my parents and surroundings. The voices of becoming a lawyer or a teacher were the voices of others rather than mine. I would be anything and if possible do everything. For example, if my friend would say pilot I would say that's what I wanted to do as well. Never realizing that it would change when I started school.
As a six year old I started school, and I started learning the basics to help me grow in life. This, in its right time slowly helped me find what I’m truly interested in. For example, I consider it like when you plant a tree, in order to grow a tree you have to plant a seed, and that is what happened throughout my elementary years. It slowly showed me all of these other careers that there is and how each one is different than others. Realizing that a lawyer or a teacher were not my only options and that people don’t have to choose for me.
However, as I left my elementary years behind , I came upon the middle school years, were I didn’t think much about what I wanted. Now knowing about all of my options, it was harder to find the right fit for me. With the help of teachers I would ask them to help me figure it out and I remember that one told me that in order to find my career I have to educate myself with what the world offers me. So, I took that advice and I started to volunteer and join clubs to find my calling in the world. This helped me learn what were my strengths and weaknesses.
Therefore, now being in high school, I realized that my path is helping others. Taking classes such as biology and chemistry I have found a love for how combining things become greater ones. This, has opened my eyes to consider medicine. Becoming a senior this upcoming school year, I’m excited to take classes such as anatomy and health careers. Classes that will slowly get me to where I truly want to go. These classes for some sound challenging, but I’m ready for that challenge.
In conclusion, for my case, school has been a big factor for what I plan to do in my life. If it weren’t for my teachers and classes I took I would still be listening to the voices of others rather than my own. There are so many things out there and if it weren’t for my teachers and of what I have captured throughout the years I would be able to say, “I’m ready!” I'm still in the process of growing in my education, I can't wait to see where I will end up.
