The Only One in the Room by Bethany - October 2014 Scholarship Essay

The perfect school environment would be if there was a student to teacher ratio of 1:1. If there was a teacher assigned to every single student, that one student would be the teacher's main focus. The teacher could conform to the individual's needs, whereas a teacher with twenty students has to make a plan that averages out everyone's abilities.

This would be more beneficial to the student because the class goes at his/her own pace. If a student is struggling on a certain part of the material, the teacher can stay with the student and explain it to him/her as extensive as is necessary. Yet, if the student can pick up the concept quickly, he/she can move onto the next thing without having to wait for other people that don't understand. This would offer the student maximum learning potential.

Another factor that would benefit the student would be how they learn. Hands-on activities are usually the most beneficial to student learning. Students can actively participate in what they are learning about, and in turn, will better retain the information being taught.

With a 1:1 ratio and hands on activities, the classroom will be formatted for high quality learning.
