The Best Educational Advice I Ever Received by Ben - May 2014 Scholarship Essay
The best piece of educational advice I ever received was from my father, who told me to always “finish strong.” He told it to me in reference to my senior year in high school; I had already been accepted to college, and, as many high school seniors in my same situation had done before me, I was not putting my full effort into my studies. My father emphasized to me that to attend school was a privilege; it was a rare situation in life for learning to be one’s primary responsibility. So, he reasoned, it would behoove me to take advantage of my time in a learning environment.
This point in my life is an ideal time to return to the academic environment of business school, to be surrounded by like-minded and collaborative students who wish to share their unique experiences and perspectives. My work experience has provided me with important technical skills and a useful knowledge base spanning corporate finance, accounting, valuation and investment management, amongst other areas of focus. Returning to school will allow me to focus on specific sectors that interest me as investment targets, for example the healthcare sector, a complex growth area about which I am particularly excited. I plan to fully take advantage of the opportunity ahead of me, and to dedicate myself fully to my studies while I am enrolled.
