Math During the Summer? by Bella - August 2021 Scholarship Essay

Every time math practice over the summer is mentioned, all kids groan and whine, except for one bright and intelligent young girl. This young girl demonstrated, during the school year, a slight struggle with subtraction facts. I love helping people, especially when it comes to school and tutoring. I love to see the smiles on their faces once they have accomplished the skill that they once struggled with. During this past school year, virtual learning has been hard on a lot of folks, so I wanted to help out as much as I could, even if it was just one family. The family of this young girl asked if I was interested in tutoring their daughter in math, since they knew I had prior experience. I said yes immediately. They had offered to pay me, but I happily declined and replied that I would rather just do it to help her out.

Tutoring this young girl has been a blessing in many ways. She is bright and funny and never fails to make me laugh, even if I had the worst morning before I arrived to see her. She has taught me to slow down and enjoy the little things in life and to not get so caught up in life that I miss the fun opportunities right in front of me. She is a joy to be around and has inspired me to take joy in the small things and to look at the world as a child would.
