Is education a right or privilege? by Baylor - January 2021 Scholarship Essay
I believe education is a right, not a privilege. This topic is debatable since opinions vary depending on people’s vision of the word education. So in retrospect, what is it?
Education is the transmission of knowledge and the training of the mind to think. Today, for one to be able to earn a good living and have a good living condition, he/she must be educated. This can be justified by the fact that the society in which we live is structured to earn a living. This is done through education, be it passing through school or even a farmer teaching his son how to farm. Additionally, education brings in respect and confidence. This is because in order to stand before an authority and be able to express what you think or your opinion, you must be educated and have knowledge of that topic.
I understand how some people may be swayed to believe education is a privilege, but my perspective is that education is a right. Although one may not have the privilege to be educated, it does not remove the right for one not to have access to an education. No matter a person’s origins, background, or financial status, they have the right to receive a proper education and it cannot be taken for any reason.
