AVID Tutor by Ayoob - December 2019 Scholarship Essay

Holding a camera to take pictures or record videos is entertaining, but when it comes to editing, Adobe Premiere is formidable. In my second semester Freshman year, Arts Media and Entertainment required most of the assignments to be turned into videos using Adobe Premiere.
Due to Adobe being challenging, I approached the more experienced students who had used Adobe Premiere to receive help; however, the teachers had a “sink or swim” attitude, so I was on my own. The first step was plotting down the storyboard. Filming was next, and finally, we had to edit---the most difficult part. I watched instructional videos on YouTube at home and during class. Day by day, I learned the information about how to change the background, make the voices clear, and cut down unimportant components. The final test was worth fifty percent. I earned both an A and extra credit for the quality of my production.
My teacher was impressed with my work so he chose me as the official photographer for the summer HOPE Program. This project aimed to help students that were new to the country to develop English skills and learn from project-based lessons. My video helped promote my school and allowed families to see the rapid progress of their children. Because of my contribution, I did it again in 2018. I was inspired by students’ stories and the idea of telling them through photography. This helped my passion grow and I found the true meaning behind what I do. I became so focused on improving my skills to be fully equipped to deliver these stories to the community.
Students arrived isolated and afraid to communicate; however, because I was able to speak their languages they became more open. I was able to serve as a role model because I had gone through similar incidents and flourished, so now I had the ability to help them do the same. Each person had a dream. Together we embraced and celebrated their diversity and their dreams.
