A Class That Deserves More Emphasis by Ava - November 2021 Scholarship Essay

Personal finance prepares you for real life issues and I feel as if it does not receive enough attention. As a high school student who has partaken in, not only one, but two personal finance classes, I still don't feel prepared for my financial future. It seems as if the public education system is more focused on the point-slope formula, rather than how to pay your bills or taxes. It is unfair to myself and several other students in this country to feel this way. Therefore, I believe that personal finance is a class that seriously deserves more emphasis.

Personal finance is a class designed to teach you how to best manage your current and future finances. In order to live a happy, healthy, and secure life, you must first have basic financial skills. It is especially important to provide more emphasis on this class in high school so that students do not find themselves in a ton of student loan debt. It is very sad how many consumers have little knowledge about their finances. With that being said, not being able to comprehend finances leads to struggles of saving and investing.

One way we can decrease the struggles of saving and investing is by making personal finance a class you are required to take your JUNIOR YEAR. This would eliminate potential student debt because students would take it right before they make a decision about where they want to go to college and how much they are willing to spend. The second way we can prevent such issues is by making it a full-year class instead of just a semester class. This would allow for more lessons and those lessons to go further into depth about preparing for future finances. It is crucial that the public education system picks up on this major issue.

Financial freedom is something everyone in this country desires. Nobody wants to spend their entire life worried about money and how they are going to afford their next water bill. As a society, we must recognize this problem and address it accordingly. Personal finance is a class that deserves way more emphasis than it is given. In order to be a well-organized and wealthy country, we need to focus on the financial side of things. As a whole, our country would benefit from students that are fully educated about their future finances!
