What's Popular vs. What's Right by Ava - March 2017 Scholarship Essay
The biggest element that haunts everyone, in every age group, at any time is the battle between what’s popular and what is right. This battle is one that is fought day in and day out and one battle that I view as useless and unimportant. If we look at our lives as our own and ourselves as someone who cannot be looked down upon, then we will be more confident and content as a whole. I could talk about the importance of the environment and politics and social justices, which are all important don’t get me wrong, but I choose to talk about an incredibly important social issue that can heal and fix the problems we face in every other battle of our lives.
Everyone wants to be liked and everyone wants to be a good person, in general, but at the same time people are always concerned about what others think of them. At every second of everyday, out of human nature, people are constantly concerned about how they are viewed from the outside instead of how they see themselves on the inside. Because of this fact of human nature and the yearning to be loved, we often sacrifice some of our own values and morals in order to achieve this. I want one day for people not to have to ask themselves how other people would see them when they feel strongly about an issue but instead think inside themselves and see what they think about themselves at that moment.
By looking inside ourselves and being confident instead of completely submissive to everyone else in the means of compromising ourselves for others benefits, we would make more progress in issues in our society maybe even including issues involving the environment, politics, and social justice. If we could do what is right and not care about if it’s popular, we would be more content as a social body and be much more efficient in our progress.
