Leadership is defined as the action of leading a group of people or an organization. Leadership skills include anything from making the right choices and influencing others to follow in your footsteps, to just saying “no” to something you know will result in negative outcomes. As individuals in today’s college society, it is vital to step up to the plate when others may not, and pursue a role of leadership. In return, this simple task could not only assist you in fulfilling your own goals, but also aid others along the way.

A dorm room to clean, food to be made, laundry to be done; it all seems to be flooding the minds of current college students. College is about becoming an independent individual and without leadership from oneself, this could be nearly impossible. It is easy to get overwhelmed with the many duties that college life holds, which is why preparing yourself is key. From a personal perspective, I have had to pursue many leadership roles in my four years of high school, within my community. Taking my job into consideration, I was in charge of a team of 16 young ladies and the ring leader to their success in their new found love of cheerleading. As a head coach of this cheerleading team , I was set in charge of running practices, creating a routine, and even taking my team to competitions as far as five hours away! With this being said, I deduce that without these skill sets, I would surely not be ready for college in the way that I am today.

Looking at leadership in more of a broad perspective, it is easy to oversee all of the responsibilities that college awaits, and take into consideration the many leadership based skills that will be required to follow each of them. Regardless of what each individual’s day to day life holds for them, it is essential to stop and take skills such as leadership into account when flashing forward to college success. Point blank, without these strengths, college would just be another day in the life, rather than a next step. Making college into a stepping stone to a brighter future is only possible with responsible, well prepared leaders at hand.
