Boys High School Volleyball by Austin - September 2019 Scholarship Essay
For some reason, boys’ volleyball does not exist in Michigan High Schools. (Title IX, cough, cough!) Volleyball is seen as exclusively a girl’s sport in this state. I love volleyball but never had the opportunity to play organized volleyball because there were no boys only or co-ed volleyball organized teams. I understand teams will be available in college but boys in the state of Michigan are at a distinct disadvantage when it comes to the openness and growth of Volleyball in the state of Michigan. How are we to prepare to be highly competitive when not given the opportunity to enjoy a sport all of us should be allowed to play?
At one time, the USA Volleyball organization recognized the shortage of available male players for the US Olympic teams and considered fostering the growth of the sport among high schools but, I never saw that take place while I was in school. To this day, women make up over 89% of volleyball players.
Bring the sport on the Michigan High Schools! Stop Discriminating against Volleyball Lovers because of Title IX. It is having the reverse effect on making sports open to all interested athletes! All sports should be open to every gender. There should never be exclusively male sports verses female sports.
