Most Ideal Classrom by Austin - October 2014 Scholarship Essay

Austin Gorden

Growing up in the small community of Olivet, Michigan has given me a great opportunity to experience the ideal classroom environment and help me succeed in my education. When learning, the perfect environment for me is a quiet yet question-friendly classroom containing 20-25 students with the ability to split into small work groups.

When I need to focus, the perfect way is to make sure I’m in a quiet environment, but where students can bring up questions and engage in discussion. What I’ve learned through my four years of high school is that if you’re confused, more than likely someone else in the classroom is also confused. This is why a question-friendly environment is so important. If one person brings up a question, the answer will most likely clear things up for other students as well. This better allows each and every student to comprehend the material and deepen their understanding, aiding in success for all students.

When regarding class size, 20-25 students in the classroom is perfect because it creates a great student to teacher ratio which is important in a learning environment. In larger classes, things can get too out of control, and I personally find it harder to focus. In a small classroom, students are more able to bond and help each other when questions come about. The biggest factor that makes me prefer a smaller classroom is the personal attention from the teacher. The teacher is able to move through the classroom and assist students without getting overloaded by trying to meet too many needs at once. With the teacher being able to migrate around the room and help clear confusion, students are able to stay focused on the work at hand. The more the students are able to stay focused and learn, the more they will be able to succeed in their education.

Having a small group of students to work with in class is very helpful for two reasons. First, it is important to have a group of fellow students to turn to for support if the teacher is not present. Having a positive support system is critical to success. Second, it is well known that teaching material helps not only the recipient but the one doing the teaching as well. In my opinion, being able to help other students with their work is one of the best ways to succeed in your own education. Not only have you learned, but you have used what you know to teacher others, reinforcing the material yourself.

Being in the correct classroom can make or break your level of success. In a quiet yet question-friendly classroom, you are able to focus and get your questions answered. A classroom with 20-25 other students provides a stable student to teacher ratio, and students can receive the attention they need. Finally, being able to split into small work groups allows you to both receive and give help to other students aiding in your ability to better succeed in your own education.
