Assist the Elderly by Aspen - February 2020 Scholarship Essay

If I were to start a nonprofit organization, it would be made up of volunteers that would assist the elderly in areas such as transportation access, shopping, and financial management.
Volunteering at the local hospital over the last two years, I spent quality time with lonely, elderly patients that had been neglected by caretakers, families, and friends. I’ve also volunteered at nearby nursing homes and listened to their personal stories. I have gained insight into the many problems the elderly face today, and I would like to start an organization that assists them in their daily lives and advocates for their well being. My organization would encourage volunteers from all professions to share their knowledge with retired people who can’t afford the help. For example, financial advisors could volunteer their time teaching elderly members how to manage their retirement funds.
My organization would also provide a platform for the elderly to share their concerns and increase public awareness regarding their needs, ultimately inspiring compassion in the hearts of younger citizens to take action. Nursing home abuse, neglect, and medication affordability are just a few of the problems the elderly face that need to be highlighted. Providing this type of support to the elderly is intrinsically rewarding and improves our society overall. As we continue to increase our life span, there are more and more elderly who need support. Love is an action, and I intend to show my love for the elderly by being their voice.
