Getting the Most Out of My Gap Year by Ashlyn - August 2019 Scholarship Essay
The phrase “gap year” tends to have a negative connotation attached to the thought of it. Often times many graduating seniors are encouraged to avoid taking a gap year, in fear that it will enervate their zeal to pursue higher education. This is a possibility, a gap year takes the student out of their regular educational routine. Once said routine is broken, it can be difficult for students to get back into this routine. However, if utilized efficiently, a gap year could be beneficial to the student.
I would make the most out of my gap year by working full time. Higher education can get expensive quickly. Therefore, to combat some of the heavy expenses that will approach, I would utilize my gap year to work and save up as much money as possible. Doing so would provide me with a slight financial advantage. This advantage could go towards books, tuition, and various fees.
In addition to this, I would use a gap year to learn what my true interests are. Applying to various internships could help me figure out what I am truly passionate about. Then, when it is time to pick out a degree plan, as well as a major and minor, I could already have the experience of knowing what I am interested in. Instead of going into college without a clear direction of what I want to do.
Lastly, I would use my gap year to apply for various scholarships. As mentioned earlier, college can be expensive. Therefore, I would use my free time to apply for scholarships to receive as much money as possible. Doing so can remove the stress of taking out loans, and other financial worries. An added bonus would be the additional writing practice I would receive by completing various scholarship essays. Therefore it is a “win-win” situation.
A gap year can put students in a tough predicament. However, if I were to take one I would make the most of it by working, to begin saving money. Utilizing it to find out my true interests, in order to know what I want to study. Then, applying for scholarships, not only to receive money, but also to tighten up my writing skills.
