Becoming a Better Student by Ashley - January 2016 Scholarship Essay

Every year is the same tradition. We have Christmas, and then New Year’s is here. New Year’s is the time when everyone tries to come up with their resolutions for how they are going to become a better person for the following year, or maybe the rest of their life. Some people follow through with it, but then for others they only last about the first week. This year I have came up with my own resolution, to be a better student throughout 2016.

I have always been a pretty good student throughout my elementary years and my high school years, but inside, I know I can always put in a little more effort. I could always start studying for tests so I can get better grades on them, instead of just blowing them off and guessing on the questions like I have always done. I could start doing my homework at home instead of waiting until my study hall the next day right before class. I have always been afraid of asking question in class and afraid of the other students thinking the questions I asked were dumb, but I could also start asking questions.

A very big part of becoming a better student is for me to stop procrastinating all the time. Too often I put off my work and tell myself that I will do it later, but I never get to it. I either tell myself that I will do it after a game, or after practice when I get home. On Friday’s after school, I tell myself that I will get my homework done on the weekends, but then Monday comes around and it still is not done. Not only does this happen with school, but this also happens with life. I know if I would stop procrastinating, or at least not procrastinate as much, I would do better with school.

Doing better in school and allowing myself to ask my teacher’s questions would be a big part of my New Year’s resolution. Trying to change how I have been in school since I was a freshman will most likely be difficult, but with a little work and effort it can be done and a lot of good will come out of it. Making this resolution, and making sure that I stick to it, will not only make me a better student, but in the end it will make me a better person.
