What is the Purpose of an Education? by Ashley - April 2015 Scholarship Essay

What is the purpose of an education? For ages, people have been questioning whether college is worth the time, money and the outcome. In my opinion, I value education and believe that it plays a big role in our future.

Questions brought up regarding education are whether education gets students ready for college or teaches them lifelong values, discipline and independency? I believe that an education benefits children for both of these aspects. Without at least a high school education, I don't believe that when children grow up they won't understand many of the controversies in the real world compared to those that at least graduated with a high school diploma. Having a high school diploma makes it so that a certain portion of education needed is finished, whether the person chooses to go to college is their own choice though.

The real question is, what is the actual purpose for an education? The real purpose for an education is to teach everyone morals, the difference between right and wrong and aspects and skills that will be needed in future work employment places. Without at least a high school diploma, how many employers are going to actually want to hire them compared to those who say for example graduated from college? Not many, this is because further education is more valuable to people when relating to the workforce because they will most likely be chosen for the job other than those with only a high school diploma or someone who obtained their GED.

Education is the main factor in preparing for children's futures. If children are taught right from wrong, how to do certain skills (such as math, science, etc...) they are going to go farther in life and end up with a better job than those who don't take education seriously.

Another purpose for education would be for obtaining a job. For example, I am going to college to become a nurse. I am going to need lots of education beforehand to be able to have that job so that I know all of the skills needed to perform the duties of the job.

Therefore, the purpose of education is to teach people how to overcome tasks in life that may be brought on. Whether it's solving a relationship problem, building a house, paying bills, becoming a nurse, etc... education is needed to be able to accomplish these tasks. Without an education, society would not know what to do with certain scenarios and life wouldn't be as full-filling compared to if the highest education possible was obtained to help with the job you are trying to get.
