College Success by Ashey - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

Leadership skills are important for multiple aspects in life, including having a successful and productive education. Attending college can be the most exciting and interesting period in a person’s life; it’s where your future takes shape. In college, leadership helps build friendships, networks and careers. Leadership is not just an act of leading others but it’s also about leading yourself. No one but you can make the decisions that can impact the rest of your life. My greatest strength that I have developed throughout my education is the ability to communicate effectively. If you don’t communicate with people about completing a project, figure out exact dates, or listen to a problem, you may not rise to your full potential.

My first two years of college have been successful largely thanks to my strong organizational skills and the use of long-term goals. Currently, I am working to obtain my Bachelor’s degree in Business Management, specializing in Human Resources. I will soon be travelling to the UK to study for my British Studies Minor, where I hope to further refine my skills, and build a good understanding of a foreign culture, knowledge that is very useful in pursuing my career.
Studying abroad will give me an immense amount of opportunities to enhance my knowledge of the ways people communicate and interact around the world; which leads us to the importance of leadership skills. Although leadership skills are essential in providing a person with a solid base on which they can operate throughout their careers; an ability to work efficiently as an individual is arguably just as essential; as the vast majority of academic tasks require only individual attention in an educational environment. Nonetheless, I maintain to work hard on improving my skills as a leader, which will hopefully be put to good use further down my career path.
