Life Without a Head by Asher - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

Leadership skills are necessary for college success not just because leadership is an essential part to life, but because college is a time of learning. Though some may say that leadership is a learned process, I believe that it is also inherent. All persons are able to lead in some way, we are all gifted in our own manners, but some are called to be true leaders.

Experiencing college the past two years it has become extremely clear to me that each person is called to lead in specific areas of life, without leadership qualities there is very little chance of success in college. Whatever the area may be, all types of leadership are an opportunity to ready yourself for life after college. Some people may be meant to lead by example, some by speaking out against the wrongs, and some by organizing things such as clubs. Whatever the trials, leadership in college is essential.

When I entered college I had no idea what it meant to be a leader, I had lived my life in the guidance of my parents, which I am extremely thankful for, for they allowed me to see wisdom in their leadership. In high school, sports gave me an opportunity to lead by example. Sports allowed me to build certain character traits of leadership that I had not known existed in myself. Then in college I saw myself begin to develop as a more vocal leader, I became part of the varsity track program at my school and have been co-captain. Though sports is only one example of an opportunity to be a leader, college opens up many opportunities to be leaders, in classrooms and in many other areas of schooling.

Going to school without being ready to lead, whatever the circumstance, is an opportunity that will be missed. Leadership skills need to be ingrained into each and every student so that they may have the opportunity to flourish in every aspect of school.
