Helping People by Aseelah - April 2015 Scholarship Essay

The purpose of an education is to discover who you along with pursuing a career that will allow you to help people. Upon graduating high school, I was uncertain about the career I wanted to pursue. I hesitantly decided I would be a psychology major when I enrolled in college. When I started taking psychology classes, I learned about the mind and how it influences behaviors. I felt that psychology fed my curiosity and gave me the opportunity to help people. However, there was another major that I considered. I eventually decided to switch my major from psychology to accounting after I learned about how fun it could be. My mom informed me about her friend who was an accountant. I learned that her friend travels for work and it made me interested in this field. Eventually, I decided to enroll in my 1st accounting class for the fall 2014 semester. In accounting class, I learned how to calculate the financial activities of businesses and how to prepare financial statements. I enjoyed the assignments I did in class and that is when I realized I had picked the right major.

I want to help people and the only way I know how is by continuing my education at Northern Illinois University. I visited Northern Illinois University last year and that visit reassured me that I had applied to the right college. When I went to the college fair last year, I was impressed with how helpful each department was. The college fair was organized into different sections. I visited the scholarship section first because paying for school was the most important to me. I was informed about a scholarship for high academic achievement. I was relieved to find out that I would get some financial assistance for getting good grades. In addition, I heard more information about the accounting program and I was given an articulation guide that was beneficial. Later, I was given a tour of the campus and how to commute to class. Overall, the college fair gave me a glimpse of how college life could be and I look forward to attending Northern Illinois University this fall.

I am currently a student at a community college and I am graduating in May with a 3.8 GPA. I plan on pursuing my degree in accounting. I believe this field allows me to showcase my mathematical skills along with my desire to help people.
