Procrastination - A Word That Haunts Every Student by Ardeena - December 2020 Scholarship Essay

For the past few years, I have been telling myself that I will not procrastinate. I’ve said this resolution aloud, posted it on my bulletin board above my desk, wrote it on multiple neon sticky notes throughout my planner and yet, somehow, I have successfully avoided my responsibilities up until the last moment. Every. Single. Year. That one essay that was due on April 4th? I started writing it on April 3rd. Math homework due next period? I finished it in the class before. This was the pattern of my life throughout high school.

Again, if someone were to ask me my New Year’s resolution for 2021, I would say the same thing; NO PROCRASTINATION. Now, many people may view procrastination as something negative, but I disagree slightly. To some extent, this has helped me be successful by pushing my limits and making me work proficiently under pressure. When I was stressed about a project deadline, I did not have time to take things slow and work on it bit by bit. Procrastinating on the project lead me to be more creative and come up with quick ideas that I may not have thought of given the time to let my mind wander with other things going on in my life.

That being said, I believe procrastination is irresponsible and it puts unnecessary stress on myself. When I started college, I realized that there is more to completing an assignment than just the satisfaction of hitting the submit button. Although I was able to complete all my assignments on time, I found myself rushing through them and not actually focusing on the content. There were many details in classes that I wished I would have paid attention to instead of rushing through the process. Learning, in general, is a process and what I have discovered about myself is that I learn better when I can fully focus on one task at a time and not have to think about all the things I must do for other classes.

For the 2021 school year, my goal is to have better time management when it comes completing to school assignments, so I don’t end up procrastinating. I plan to use more digital applications, such as Excel, to keep track of due dates and exam times. Doing this will ensure that I am held accountable for knowing when I need to complete assignments. Having my agenda written online will also help me be more organized in maintaining and updating my daily schedule. I believe I will successfully keep my resolution for next year because I have learned the importance of time management and how it is vital that I follow my planned schedule to be able to successfully maintain good grades in school, while still having time for other things I enjoy, such as working at my part-time job and volunteering in the community.
