Dream jobs: How I have chose them and what I am doing now by Antonio - June 2017 Scholarship Essay

At the age of six my selection process for a career was simple: find something you like and do it. I only cared about doing what I enjoyed and did not consider how I could help others. As a result, my ideas for “dream jobs” changed as quickly as my interests. As I matured I began to think about how my job would affect others more than myself while still carefully considering the amount of enjoyment and fulfillment I would receive from that job.
The clearest job I remember wanting to have at six was a chef. This career choice is a perfect example of how I chose jobs at that age, and what I did to work toward them. When I was young my mother would watch a lot of cooking shows on television. This is my best guess at what sparked my interest for becoming a chef. For several months I thought this was what I wanted to do with my life, but in actuality, I did nothing to accomplish this goal. I did not learn any recipes or take any interest in cooking. I just enjoyed the thought of the completed goal. Obviously, with this mentality it is impossible to make progress; it was only until later that I discovered what I wanted to do and how I could achieve it.
Over the school years, my process for choosing jobs remained the same as it did when I was six. I would shift from wanting to be a police officer, to an anesthesiologist, to an artist. I would not seriously consider an option and eventually I would get bored and move on. Now my philosophy is more complex. Currently, I see jobs as goals. I see what is required to complete that goal and accomplish what is necessary. I am now working towards becoming an environmental engineer. I feel like I would enjoy the work that I would be doing and I would have a positive effect on the environment. My first step is volunteering at my neighborhood Urban Ecology Center. There I have a hands-on introduction to the basic skills required in environmental engineering, such as sampling and field work. While this is just a start I feel that it is a far cry from what I have done in the past.
