Violence is Unnecessary When Showing One's Feelings by Antonio - March 2017 Scholarship Essay
In the society in which we live, and the people with whom we live with, it is not uncommon that there are those who want to show how they feel. In fact, if we can categorize individuals based on that concept, we’d categorize them as either shy, moderately shy, or outgoing. Those who are shy are afraid to express their feelings often; those who are moderately shy sometimes express their feelings but it isn’t uncommon for them to hide their feelings; those who are outgoing doesn’t care about hiding their feelings. I would categorize myself as moderately shy, I like to talk and express myself, but other times, I’m quiet and keep my feelings hidden. However, on stage, in front of a school-wide audience, I would not talk about these categories. In fact, I am only going to talk about a subcategory under outgoing, those who are willing to go to the dangerous extreme, and perhaps the fatal extreme. On stage, I would be talking about those who would show their feelings to the extreme and commit the unthinkable, violence.
Violence is not uncommon in society and it has cost many innocent people their lives. Shootings, brutal attacks, and fights are just a few examples of the violence present in society. When I look at a news story that recounts an act of violence, I always think to myself, “What could this violent individual have lost if the problem in which motivated the act of violence was taken care of in a non-violent manner? Why should someone have to get seriously or fatally injured because the violent one could not simply move on and cope with the situation without resorting to violence?” Despite this simple logic, there are people who can’t restrain themselves. So, I ask this question to everyone, “How would you feel if you were the victim of violence? It doesn’t matter how physically fragile someone is, for you can easily get seriously or fatally injured by that same fragile individual if that individual picked up a weapon that outpowered you. A simple car or gun would easily get the violent job done.” There are things that angers everyone, but not everyone resorts to violence to solve it. By talking it out or simply letting the situation go and moving on, lives could be saved.
Of course, someone in the school-wide audience may ask the question, “Then why not ban weapons, such as guns?” Unfortunately, it’s not that easy because no matter what precautions we take, someone could still find a way to enact violence. Guns were first made primarily for combat against enemies and defense. This same concept was made when civilian guns were made. Guns are for those who can’t physically defend themselves and thus must resort to the use of the weapon if seriously or fatally threatened. This means that eliminating such a weapon from civilians entirely may be the wrong move. However, it is true that civilians have used guns to commit heinous crimes. So, if you are to commit violence, think about this: Before you stand up, with either a weapon in your hand or not, and you have the intention of doing harm, think about what would happen if the one you were going to attack were to attack you first. What if you fail and you’re harmed or killed? By putting your weapon away and sitting back down, you have just saved a life. Unfortunately, there are those who would not sit back down. Parents should take the extra step to ensure that their child, before they become an adult, is watched. If they show problems of violence and anger, then perhaps anger management can be done with a professional. Parents can also save lives by doing that simple act, where although buying a gun may be necessary for defense, it would never actually be used because there would not be a gun requiring situation.
Violence is an unnecessary way for one to show his or her feelings. However, there are precautions one could to take the reduce the amount of violence present, and even the one who intends to commit such an act can try to stop him or herself. This topic is necessary for students to understand, especially bullies, so that is why I would stand in front of a school audience to speak about this issue. By speaking out and representing the general good of the public, I would hope to save lives from serious or fatal injuries. I believe that this topic is a necessary topic for students, and even if it fails, at least there is work to prevent it.
