The Importance of Attending College by Annette - April 2020 Scholarship Essay
Have you ever asked the what-if question or wondered what life would be like without the experience of attending college? Imagine being in an environment in which you are the only one who chooses not to attend college. Knowing that I feel this way, has driven me to construct my strategy to college success meticulously.
Growing up, I was centered around relying on my mother, educators, counselors, therapists, mobility instructors, and vision teachers, but college, to me, is the foundation for my future. It is the beginning of my adult life. College is where I choose the educational path I would like to pursue and to work towards creating educational and financial stability for myself. I need to attend college because I will make new and lasting friendships, I will get the opportunity to participate in leadership programs in which I will develop and strengthen my skills in time management, teamwork and problem-solving. I will learn to prepare for my upcoming experience in the field of work through internships. To have the foresight and to experience the world with my peers through travel abroad programs, to learn to accept constructive criticism, and to fulfill my life-long dream of becoming a doctor. All these are part of the educational goals I set for myself.
College is also where I will make many discoveries in becoming more mature and making rational decisions in all aspects of my life. It is vital for me to attend college because I would have proven to myself that I have defied the odds of the many setbacks I have had. That I did not allow my financial circumstances or homelessness or my eye condition deprive me of making such a valuable decision about my life.
As part of my transition to attending college, the realization of becoming more independent has become more apparent. Therefore, it is critical to make rational decisions to facilitate me in attaining higher-level education. By so doing, I will be able to contribute and play a more pivotal role in my growth and development, but most importantly, work in my power to excel and develop the tools needed to pay it forward wholeheartedly.
