Is attending college worht it? by Anne - April 2020 Scholarship Essay

As someone who was born and raised in a Caribbean island where education is not easily accessible to everyone, I personally believe that a college education is extremely worth it and should not being something that people look over. Besides the useful knowledge that is being taught in college, attending college brings a sense of independence that individuals have to learn in order to transition into their adult lives. To add on, attending college allows one to network and develop th4e social skills that is needed to survive in the real world.

The first and most important reason why I believe attending college is worth it is the knowledge that it provides. I do not just mean knowledge for the field that one chooses to go into but life lessons, how to deal with certain social issues and so much more. College is basically mandatory for those that plan on going into a STEM field, political field or any other major that requires lots of information. For those outside of those majors that may feel as if college would not play a factor in their success, although that may at times be true, I would highly recommend for them to attend. The important social skills that I’ve personally learned at my university are ones that I would not have learned if I did not decide to attend. I learned how to handle different people, I learned how to hustle and I learned to do certain things on my own instead of depending on someone else to help me do it, all of which can take someone far in life.

To add on, college teaches one to be independent which is a skill that most people will eventually have to learn. If the student is far away from home, it teaches them how to budget, it teaches them problem solving skills and even the little skills such as cleaning, cooking, laundry, ect. Even if the student is staying at home while attending college, they get to learn about being responsible and self accountability.

Attending college or a University is the biggest investment someone can make towards their future. The networking opportunities are endless and can possibly lead to major investments towards one's business, career or whatever they decide to do in life. College prepares students for the real world by allowing them to learn the social skills and the knowledge that they need in order to succeed. Personally, I believe there are way too many pros of attending college to deny its importance and the life changing positive effects it may have one someone.
