Looking Ahead by Anna - January 2014 Scholarship Essay

I have tried studying in a lot of different ways – practice problems, highlighting, and reviewing my notes. And all of these have varying degrees of effectiveness. But my favorite method is a little different because it happens before the class. The best study strategy I have used is to look over the material before my teacher teaches it.

I first used this technique when I took chemistry. I had extra time one day so I decided to go ahead in the textbook. In class the next day, I realized how much that had helped me. I was able to raise my hand and answer questions. I began to try this for my other classes too, and saw how it also worked there. It is my favorite method of studying because it sets me up for success.

Learning ahead is helpful for several reasons. It is harder to implement than simple review because I often do not understand the material the first time through, and may have to read it again. I rarely completely understand it by myself. But this introduces me to the topic, so that when the teacher discusses, I already know the basics. This allows me focus on understanding the more complex parts when she explains it. I learn the vocabulary ahead of time, so I get an idea of how to use it.

This advanced reading also helps me make connections. If I kind of understand what is happening in class, instead of frantically taking notes and trying to figure out what my teacher is saying I can think more deeply, and relate it to other things I have learned. I read a translation of a book in my English class by an author I discussed in my German class. I applied techniques learned in my math class to problems in my physics class. These connections are what education is all about – actually being able to use what I learn. They allow me to enjoy learning. And looking over the material ahead of time is the best way for me to get there.
