Little Mozarts by Angela - December 2019 Scholarship Essay

I have been involved in various volunteering organizations and events both inside and outside of my community. Some of my experiences include being a camp counselor, teaching English, planning events, and organizing donation drives. However, my experience volunteering with the Little Mozarts program as a teacher stands out to me the most.

I began volunteering with this program in my freshman year. At the time, I did not want to participate because I was extremely shy and self-conscious. I wasn’t sure if I would be able to teach and bond with a group of children I didn’t even know.

Although I was hesitant at first, my students' eagerness to learn reassured and motivated me to open up. Establishing a bond with my students was a unique and unforgettable experience, and I have become a courageous and responsible leader. Since I have started working with the Little Mozarts program, I have guided twelve inexperienced students to become confident performers. When the program ended, enough money was raised to not only continue running the program, but also to provide private lessons for outstanding students. A year later, these students were invited back to perform at the fundraising concert. They had improved so much since the beginning of the program. Before, none of my students had ever used a musical instrument. After the program, all of them knew how to play piano, read sheet music, and had a newfound confidence in themselves that they were capable of learning and growing. It was inspiring to see their growth and transformation. One of the students shared that she enjoyed playing the piano very much and that she wanted to continue taking lessons in the future. She added that the program encouraged her to go after her interest in music.

When I saw these students' progress, I pictured a great future ahead of them, and I am proud to be a part of their growth and journey. Not only did I aid them through this program, I have learned from them as well, and have grown to be more confident, patient, and empathetic.
