Sherlock Holmes by Angel-Marie - April 2014 Scholarship Essay
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's character, Sherlock Holmes, has been a significant influence in the way I view the World and the people I encounter daily. The brilliant and social isolated detective prides himself on viewing the World in a purely scientific and analytical manner. This allows Mr. Holmes to review all aspects of a challenge and consider the best means of dealing with the situation. After reading "The Hound of the Baskersvilles" I have attempted to apply the same methods to problems that occur in my own life. Sherlock has become a symbol of reason and a reminder that there is no dilemma that does not have a solution.
Though Doyle never rights from the perspective of Sherlock Holmes, preferring the view-point of Dr. Watson, the personality and depth of character instilled in the detective is admirable. The life like quality makes Holmes the type of individual I strive to be. While to many Sherlock is cold and unfeeling it becomes apparent he is loyal and devoted to those close to him. I have begun to mold my life in a way that allows me to integrate these characteristics into my personality.
Sherlock Holmes embodies what I believe are the idea characteristics of humanity; loyalty, intelligence, motivation, and knows that work is vital to progress.
