The Importance of ASL by angel - March 2017 Scholarship Essay
Imagine walking down the street not knowing what anyone is saying, or what they are doing. The deaf and mute have this struggle daily; because no one learns American Sign Language in school. Having an ASL class here at Vista del Lago would not only help students with communication but, also with having a bilingual or trilingual resume.
Learning American Sign Language will make anyone who comes to the school feel included; as do the students who know Spanish or French and take the classes. This will help the students with communicating to fellow classmates that maybe never get the chance to talk with anyone because they're the only ones who know ASL. This will break down the language barrier that many students unfortunately have around them. Students might find it difficult at first, but that's the same with any foreign language at first; However Many schools in San Diego have already made the move to add ASL classes in their schools, because they see how Beneficial and fun it is to the students. When the students begin to understand the basics they'll fell accomplished and they'll want to continue learning.
Not only would it help them communicate with their friends on campus, but also with customers at work. Many students who speak another language know how beneficial it is to have a bilingual background towards the working environment. The Common language is Spanish, Whereas ASL is a rare language that many companies pay the employees most for knowing. Teaching ASL gives the students an advantage towards finding a job and keeping it. The Starbucks company has already begun this motion with having staff that knows ASL. Also the staff that does know it has a better chance of keeping the job, because the companies want to keep their stores diverse so they can have a larger consumer rate.
All in all my opinion on the future class is American Sign Language, because it will benefit the students on and off campus. The students know how beneficial the bilingual title is, and many strive for more than just that. Opening this class will be groundbreaking on this campus, because it has never occurred as a foreign language to students.
