German Honors' Society: Door to Success in a Globalized Society by Andrew - March 2014 Scholarship Essay

As a high school senior, one of my greatest educational achievements heretofore has been my induction into the German Honors' Society at my High School, Paul Laurence Dunbar. I have, for much of my educational career, had an extreme passion in learning foreign languages, having learned German for 6 years, and now being enrolled in French and Spanish alongside it. Through all this, I have learned a few fundamentals that apply to all individuals attempting the monumental task of learning a new language. Mainly, one should be dedicated to the cause and have within them a true desire and passion to learn it, one that exceeds the 90 minutes of note-taking and instruction that is only given 2-3 times weekly at best. It must be spoken, to those that understand the language and can make corrections, and it must be written, to learn the structure, nuances, idioms, and grammatical rules of it.

Following these guidelines, I have made the most of each and every one of my foreign language classes and made exceedingly well-done grades, even when my peers have not. These efforts were memorialized when I was inducted into GHS, as only those who received the highest grade possible for 3 semesters or more were allowed a membership. To me, this symbolizes that through sheer effort and dedication, any skill can be mastered, and even more, anything is possible. As I ready myself to attend a rigorous 4-year University, I hope to achieve more and more prestigious awards in the field of foreign languages and language arts, and use my skills learned to effectively communicate with those around the globe for mutual benefit and the betterment of international society.
