Are leadership skills necessary for college success? Why or why not? by Amber - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

The definition of leadership is to lead a group of people or an organization. In my opinion this particular definition of leadership is unnecessary to succeed in college, however I believe that it will help make your college experience a successful one. It is not necessary to interact with individuals regularly in courses so I don’t think the textbook definition of leadership is necessary. Although, I do feel it is very important to show leadership of self.

It’s quite easy to go through each course participating in the most minimal way possible which will get you through college, but won’t provide you with the full college experience. When people succeed at something or find they do something well they tend to engage and apply themselves and maybe even have fun doing it. When you are a leader of yourself and your own actions you control this outcome thus increasing your chances at college success.

Leadership of self means that you not only complete assignments but take the responsibility to give it your best effort, and be sure it’s finished to the best of your ability. Leadership of self also includes maintaining your personal health, sleeping regularly, eating brain healthy foods, and allowing yourself ample time to study and complete assignments.

In order to succeed in college and have your college experience also be a success it’s essential that you practice leadership skills. In college time management is a huge issue for many students. It takes leadership to train your body and brain to do the things that are required instead of the things that are fun.

I do believe that leadership skills are necessary for college success.
