A New Beginning by Amber - November 2014 Scholarship Essay

The transition from middle to high school is a big one. Probably the biggest one that an incoming freshman will have to encounter. High school is the beginning of their young lives¬–a stepping-stone to their future that leads to college and eventually, a job. The changes that these students experience are sudden and overwhelming, which is often hard to adjust to. Therefore, it is important for freshmen to realize the importance of high school and view it as the foundation for the rest of their lives.

Many students begin their high school careers as slackers or partyers, telling themselves that freshman year doesn’t really matter. Oh I’ll just try next year. That’s when the grades really matter. No matter how ideal these statements seem, they’re not true. While high school is the foundation for one’s future, freshman year is the foundation of high school. Without good work ethics and hard work to lead one into sophomore and junior year, it is almost impossible for a student to achieve the even more rigorous classes and workload ahead. The misconceptions that freshman year grades don’t matter are also false. True, it is only ¼ of one’s high school career. But it still counts towards GPA and rank, two very important items that seem relatively insignificant as a freshman. Only when one is a junior when it’s too late to change the past, does the student realize the mistake he made 3 years ago.

High school is a new beginning. It’s a fresh start, a time to enjoy and find whom one really is. However, it is critical for freshman to remember the importance of their education and work hard in school for all 4 years. Starting from the bottom, all the way to the top.
