Effective Studying Techniques by Amber - January 2014 Scholarship Essay

I know very few people who enjoy studying. Studying is necessary for success in any level of schooling. It helps encode information into your brain for storage for later use when you need to recall that information. Without studying, the chance of success is lowered.

I have used multiple methods to study in the past. In middle school and the beginning of high school, most of the time I would simply read and re-read most of the content I needed to learn. Sometimes I would even cram the night before for exams and various assessments. It was clear that I needed to find a studying technique that worked best for me. Not only did I need to keep exquisite grades for college, I also needed to make sure that I knew the information being taught, for future use.

After trying many different ways to study such as flash cards, reading, online games, and other methods, I realized that I had found what worked best for me. First of all, paying close attention in class helps you retain the information better. Also I found that for me using more than one method of studying is the most effective way for me to study. For each class I have I use online flash cards, quizzes, games, and I read and re-read the material covered. Using all available resources to study helps me to be as prepared as possible. Another great tool is using your peers to help by quizzing you on the information.

There are many fantastic ways to study. Different study methods work for different people. Some people learn differently than others. Personally for me, repetition is the best way for me to learn. Repetitively reviewing the information in different ways helps me to achieve the highest grades possible.
