Mr. Evert changed my thinking and my life by Amanda - July 2014 Scholarship Essay
My first semester of college was extremely hard on me. I had been out of school for 14 years and got thrown back into a fast moving Algebra class. My math teacher was there for me from the first day and all my doubts about the fact that I did not think I could do this class. Mr. Evert gave me the confidence that I so desperately needed. My first quiz in the class was horrible I thought. “NO way am I going to be able to pass this class!” But Mr. Evert was there to answer any questions I had to stay after class and to help with any of my questions. The day before the first big test he came in early, any student that wanted extra help or had any questions he would answer.
I passed that first test with an A. I was so proud of myself. I knew that if I could get an A in Algebra, my worst subject, I could make it in anything that I tried to do. He changed my whole outlook in life. I thought I was just naturally bad at a lot of things, but he taught me that we are not just bad at things, that we just need to work a little harder at some things than others. We can accomplish whatever we set out minds to do. It is just a matter of how much time and work we are willing to put into to trying to get better at something. It was Mr. Evert’s caring and reassuring attitude that made me believe in myself and I ended the class with one of the highest grades.
I will take a piece Mr. Evert in everything that I do. I know he will be in the back of my mind telling me, “You can do this.” I may not be good at a lot of things but I now know that if I set my mind to learning something and really put in the time and effort I can and will learn it and become good at it.
