On My Own by Amanda - March 2014 Scholarship Essay

I graduated from a very small, private high school and always enjoyed my math classes. I never felt like I was one of the super smart kids that always made 100’s on every test, but I did catch on pretty quickly. In fact, most of the time I found myself tuning out the teacher just to work ahead of the other students that were still struggling to grasp new concepts. Eventually, math classes became more like a study hall to work on homework.

Once I reached my junior year, things changed. I had an awesome teacher, Mr. Turner, who noticed my talent and boredom in Geometry. One day, he pulled me aside after class and told me that I should be in the accelerated math classes. I laughed at the silly suggestion, because I knew I wasn’t like the rest of those brainiacs. He went on to tell me that I should continue with the lessons at my own pace. After agreeing to his terms, I began.

The next day I sat in an adjoining classroom by myself and opened up my textbook. I read, studied, and did the homework alone. Each week I would return to my beloved teacher to be tested on the material, taking up his time to do so after school often. One afternoon, Mr. Turner had me attempt to calculate a specified area of a very complicated diagram. I worked for what seemed like several minutes as he sat patiently waiting for my answer. With much doubt and hesitation, I revealed my answer. I will never forget the look of shock on his face. I just knew that I was way off and started to feel embarrassed that he had put so much hope into my ability. “That is correct,” he said very seriously. I know my mouth must have dropped when I realized he wasn’t joking. I was amazed that I had calculated it correctly on the first attempt! I went home that day on cloud nine!

That year, I was awarded with the highest GPA of my geometry class. Mr. Turner made a huge impact on my life and education. I am so thankful that he thought so highly of me and helped me see it as well. He became a great inspiration in my life and has even influenced my decision to become a teacher. My hope is that one day, I can help other students recognize their potential, not only inside the classroom, but outside as well.
