A goal among other goals by Amal - July 2015 Scholarship Essay

As a Biology major student, I’ve been exposed to large amounts of possible career opportunities to pursue in the future. Now nearing the start of my third year of university, I’d finally come to the decision in pursuing a career in dentistry. I had originally kept a keen interest towards the medical field but once I had completed a significant amount of hours of volunteering and shadowing, the decision for dentistry had become quite clear to me. However, although my interest towards the dental field is secure, I am still inspired to join an internship abroad program. Although there are many internships offered locally, I am still set on the idea interning somewhere else in the world, specifically in a lesser developed country.

Many years ago, my loving parents emigrated from Africa in order to expose themselves to better education systems for themselves and their future children. Unfortunately, the area that they had emigrated from is still struggling to sustain itself. It had always been a goal of mine to one day travel there and assist in relieving any possible struggles. It is evident that dental hygiene is a vital contribution to human health. As an intern, I not only would observe local dentists, I would also perform routine tasks in hospitals and clinics. In developed countries, the struggle in conveying the importance of oral health is evident. As an intern, I would have the opportunity to teach citizens in a lesser-developed country this importance. This opportunity would also allow me to create networks and accumulate new learning and creative skills.

I believe that attaining an internship will allow graduate schools to acknowledge my ambition to better the world and relieve any possible hardships that I possibly could. The thought of helping others has always inspired me to increase the input of effort towards my education. Overall, besides graduating and hopefully becoming a dentist, I hope to accomplish the goal of helping in a way that a struggling community will benefit from, while also allowing me to further appreciate my future field of study.
