The importance of college by Alyssa - April 2020 Scholarship Essay

Many Americans feel that it is extremely important to attend college, they feel that it is crucial for students to continue their education so that they can get a well paying job and be able to support themselves and their future families. However, a substantial amount of Americans also believe that college is not the only way to achieve this goal, trade school is also a viable option for many students. As a student raised during the 21st century I have heard form many people including my parents and teachers that I must do well in school so that 4 year college or university and pursue a high paying career. It has been drilled into us from the time that we were kids that we must go to college so that we can get a good job because if we do not we will end up working at McDonald's and we will not be able to support ourselves. However, this is a big misconception that we need to stop spreading to our children, in reality not all people have to attend college and become doctors, lawyers, or even teachers. While we will always need people in these positions there is also a dire need for electricians, plumbers, and even cosmetologists and paralegals. These are all things that you can go to trade school for. Trade school is a school where students will learn about their particular profession in a way, it is somewhat like college but, it usually only takes two years to complete. For most of our parents and grandparents going to trade school was not a favorable option because the career that you would end up with did not pay good money and therefore, it was much more favorable for somebody to go to a 4 year college to obtain a higher education. However, now times have changed and an electrician or a plumber can actually make pretty good money definitely enough to support a family especially if they own their own business. What this means for us as students is that we no longer need to go through 4 years of schooling to be "successful" in society. We can now go through 2 ears of schooling and start making money and supporting ourselves before our peers that choose a 4 year college. In conclusion, I believe that college is extremely important but, I do not believe that you must attend a 4 year college to be successful I believe you can be just as successful by attending a trade school.
