The Difference Between a Dream and a Reality by Alyssa - June 2017 Scholarship Essay

The six year old version of myself was not thinking about the career that was going to make me the most money, or support my future family the best. Rather, I was dreaming of what it would be like to work with animals every day, or save people from getting sick. Looking back on that version of myself, I compare my career choice change from a hopeful dream, to a logical reality. Elementary school taught us that dreaming was good for us, and that it was important to enjoy being a child while you had the chance. Higher education helps you to realize that while reaching for the stars is still admirable, it's a little less likely to make a living from.
My career path has changed immensely as I've moved from grade to grade, and grown from a child to a teenager, and finally a young adult. One thing has remained the same all throughout this time however, I've always been someone that is determined and enjoys making big plans and executing them. I went from playing with dolls and wanting to find the cure to all illnesses, to learning to drive and wanting to own my own business. I believe the classes I've taken up to this point have helped to mold me into this person. Beginning with the basics in elementary school, how to read, write, perform basic math functions, to now focusing more on my interpersonal skills, and how I can make meaningful connections with the people around me, I feel as though my education, and my educators themselves have influenced me, and have helped to lead me in the direction that I am now following.
As I continue my education, and continue making these relationships with other people, I see myself taking everything that I have learned throughout my time in school, and putting it all together to use to my advantage. This compilation of knowledge that I have attained through years of hard work and experience have not only aided in my success, but also swayed me to find exactly what I wish to do with the rest of my life. I still find that saving people from illness is something I’ve carried with me throughout this time, but I can’t deny my interests in the business side of how it would all work. Because of this, I have been pursuing a career in corporate health, and hope to be able to assist large corporations in making their employees overall healthier, and helping them obtain the resources they need in order to do this. I’ve grown up seeing so many people suffering due to unhealthy diets and lifestyles, including myself. By taking the classes I have, I’ve been able to see the affects of health on my own lifestyle, and I hope to be able to help others see the affects on theirs. All in all, my education has greatly impacted my career choice, and I believe it will continue to do so in the future.
