In your opinion, what is the purpose of an education? by Allison - April 2015 Scholarship Essay

There is everything to be gained through education, nothing to be gained through ignorance. In our society, education has many purposes. In the broadest sense, I believe the purpose of education is to learn about various subjects in order to better navigate through the world. Simple subjects like math and reading are taught early on. These simple subjects enable students to read signs in the community, and do simple math to manage money. But as one ages and enters into higher education, the subjects get more complex. During college and graduate school, students have a chance to discover their passions and are taught to think critically about many different issues. They also are better equipped to find where they want to place themselves in the world. The purpose of education is to help and individual become the best version of themselves.

The purpose of education is to become a functioning member of society that feels the responsibility to the community and to the world, to give back. I believe the better educated an individual is, the more likely they are to be open-minded, accept new concepts and ideas which can lead to greater success. Education often leads to greater tolerance and acceptance. Through education we become better people, we become less violent, more compassionate, and happier. Education gives students the opportunity to understand the world as it was, how it currently is, and to brainstorm and problem solve for the future. Education can open doors that a student would have never thought possible. It may introduce them to a field of study or work that they never knew existed.

Education often leads to more enlightened adults, and becoming an expert in one’s field can lead to higher praise, and more influence. Many people go to school so they can make more money, but by the end of their college careers, many students would argue that it is not about making money anymore, it is about learning about what makes you happy and finding a way to pursue that happiness.

Another purpose of education is to keep up on current events, to understand how different cultures, different theories work and are applied in our world. College broadened my mind and allowed me to explore new ideas, many of which helped shape the person I am today. I met people from all walks of life during college which made me realize the importance of good communication. I was also able to view concepts and issues from different perspectives and developed critical thinking skills. Through taking many different classes, I found my passion for human rights, sustainability, and giving back to my community.

After college, I found my career options had increased because of my degree. I have more opportunities and earn more money because of my degree. My graduate degree will enable to me to make a greater impact on the world. The benefits of a higher education will always outweigh the cost.

College is important to me because it has enabled me to become the best version of myself.
