It's Not As Important As You Might Think by Allison - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

When I thought if leadership skills are necessary for college success my immediate thought was yes. Of course leadership is important. No brainer. Then I pondered on the question for a moment or two, and changed my position. No. Leadership skills are not necessary for college success. Leadership skills are a great asset in college, and even life. The skill of leadership is important, but not a necessity.

My reasoning is that college success is defined as graduating, and learning. Successfully completing college to walk across a stage to embark on the next phase of life. Leadership can make college more of an experience with being the head of sports, clubs, fraternities, or sororities – but that is not success. A student does not have to be involved in any of these extracurricular activities to receive their college degree. Receiving an actual college degree is success in itself. It can be taken for granted.

Some people are not successful in college, because they do not finish or they drop out due to lack of determination, or finances – usually nothing to do with leadership skills. Leadership skills do not define a person for their success, much less their college success. There are many successful individuals that do not have the best leadership skills. It is just a good quality, but it is definitely not necessary. College success is being able to complete college, and that does not involve leadership at all – just little drive, and determination.
