A Lead to College Success by Allison - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

To be successful in college, leadership skills are necessary. Leadership is more than just leading other individuals. Ultimately, it is about being able to endure all of one’s responsibilities and being successful as he or she conquers those tasks. There are many characteristics that compose a successful leader.

When I think of college, I imagine the professors teaching the class the material they need to know. Once the teaching is completed, it is the student’s responsibility to prepare for a test. Unlike high school, there is more free time, where there has to be a decision made on whether a student uses his or her time wisely. Time management is a key leadership skill that is needed to be successful in college.

Have you ever become nervous when thinking about standing in front of a group of people and making a speech? The truth is that everyone has felt that way. I have learned that by being a leader an abundance of confidence is needed and gained. College is going to throw situations at each student where he or she may not feel comfortable at all. An individual has to overcome those fears and be confident in what he or she may do. In the end, it will make each student a stronger person.

As a leader, one must listen as well as communicate. In high school, a majority of teenagers seem to be anxious to ask their teacher a question about something they may not understand. How can students ever learn that way? It is a smart idea to communicate not only with teachers but also with other classmates. Along with communication, another important quality for being a leader is to listen. One cannot learn without listening to others. It is especially important to listen to educators. A leader also needs to listen to the concepts of his or her peers because being a leader is not only about one’s self; it is about the people around him or her, too.

It is apparent that college holds a great deal of responsibilities. Managing schoolwork, friendships, relationships, and jobs can be quite overwhelming. College requires many leadership characteristics to be successful. As long as one possesses these attributes, he or she should be able to achieve all of his or her goals and succeed in everything that he or she pursues as both a leader and a student.
