Two Biggest Supporters by Allison - October 2019 Scholarship Essay

“Receive, Amelia was expected to receive a copy of the book on Thursday.” I scribble down each of the letters from the word my father read to me. R-E-C-E-I-V-E. He speaks the next word and I jot them out on my paper. The scratching of my pencil against the wooden table is nearly drowned out by the sizzling of my mother cooking dinner. He continues to read off the list, over and over until each of the words are burned into my mind and our dinner is sitting on the table.
Throughout the years, my parents have been the most supportive in my academic career. They pushed me to achieve, to be the best in the class, to settle for nothing less than the best. They believed that I had so much to offer, that I could accomplish anything when I put my mind to it. Their love and support led me to become the brilliant student I am today.
From a young age, my parents pushed me. If I needed help on a math problem, answering questions on an English worksheet, or reading off my spelling lists, they sat down with me and spent hours helping me become better. After long days at work, despite wanting to go straight to bed, they stayed up with me. They always tried to help me decipher content so I could understand. Their support pushed me to be the best. I think part of the reason they want me to excel is because they weren’t able to. Neither of them went to college and because of that, they want me to take a different path. They want me to reach for a higher education so I can be more successful than they were. Everything they have done for me has been to set me up, to create an atmosphere that would drive myself. And eventually, I began to push myself on my own. I now want to excel and strive to be the best I can. I want to get that A on my test, to be the top of the class, to continue my education and continue to learn in college.
The love and support my parents gave me growing up led me to become the strong and driven person I am today. Knowing my limits, yet pushing my academic boundaries is now a choice and something I look forward to every day. Each day I challenge myself, wondering how can I do to better understand the content and how can I improve for the next task thrown my way. I appreciate everything they’ve done for me, for believing in me before I could believe in myself, for giving me a firm foundation of hard work and a thirst for knowledge. With them by my side, I have become someone I am proud to be.
