My Academic Inspiration by Allie - October 2019 Scholarship Essay

In most people’s lives, there are those people who you look up to, who can’t do anything wrong in your eyes. Those people are role models. When asked to choose who in my life has had the greatest influence on me academically, I thought about writing about my favorite teacher or someone who is influential in their field. So I thought, why not write about someone who is both; my mother. Over the past 17 plus years she has been a hard worker, teacher, and my best friend. She is an 8th grade science teacher who works hard every day to help students acquire a valuable education. She has taught me her love for learning in all different ways and everyday I strive for success because of her. Not only is she influential when it comes to academics, but to me, she is a constant reminder of true love. My mom cares deeply for everyone that she crosses paths with, whether it is her family or someone new she may meet at a store. When asked to help a member of my family, she never even hesitates to include something new and challenging to her seemingly never-ending to-do list. My mother has suffered the threat of cancer, parental loss, miscarriages, and what might be one of the hardest things, raising 4 children. I don’t know anyone else in the world who is more kind hearted, brave, educational, reliable and trustworthy than my mother is. Unlike some people who yearn to have a close relationship with their mothers, I am lucky to have been blessed with that kind of relationship from the beginning. My junior year, I decided to take AP calculus and both my mother and I knew what a struggle the class was going to be. However, she supported me the whole way, even at my lowest points. She believed in me, and knew that I could handle anything I set my mind to. Never was there a time where she doubted me and told me that I should drop the class and choose the easy way out. She always encouraged me through every rough patch, and I have been remarkably grateful for all of her help along the way. As a teacher, she comes home from a long day of teaching up to 120 thirteen year olds and is still willing to help her family, or anyone in a time of need. I reckon it is the greatest gift to have, putting others stability before her own. Not only is my mother incredibly loyal, intelligent, reliable, and caring, she is extremely hard headed and tough. When she was in her 20s she decided to join the national guard and fly planes. She was one of the only women in her class, and she would never let any of the guys intimidate her. She was determined to get through the national guard and come out as a successful student. My mom is strong and independent, and that is why I look up to her. She is always there for not only my family, but all her friends, and I aspire to be just like that. Considering everything she does, her kindness and consideration has had such a huge impact on me. Most importantly, she always encourages me to do my best in everything I do, and I know she is always there for me. I know I can go to my mom with any struggles I encounter and she will have my back, no matter what. She is incredibly loyal and she is my rock, my world. She shows me that if I care for others and not just myself, then I can still be victorious. Everyday I am making an effort to achieve that goal and I hope that one day I can become even half the woman that she is. She pushes me academically and encourages my success always, no matter the situation. Altogether, my mother makes me want to become a better person. I would like to say that I am the most fortunate daughter, and that I am a better, altruistic person overall because of my loving mother.
