How to select subjects for High School by Ali Hamza - March 2017 Scholarship Essay
Many students get confused when they see the sheet, ‘Subject selection for your next high school year’. Well, this process is thought to be very complicated or very simple. This is not the case. Selecting a subject for high school is one of the most important decisions a student makes in his life. Some students select subjects that are too difficult or too simple for them, and later regret their mistakes. But why do they make such decisions? There are many answers to this question. First of all, students are influenced by their peers in their school. While selecting their subjects, they look at their peers and think that ‘I have to be with him /her in my next year as he /she is my best friend’. This causes the student make wrong choices and get frustrated on themselves. A student should consider the fact that he is different from his friends and has different potentials and needs than his friends.
In other cases, students see that their friends are taking either too difficult or too easy subjects. They think that even I can do that, and to impress their friends/family, take subjects which are of no use for them. This can cause bad decisions and can lead to regrets. Students should always assess themselves before taking any subject. They should do some research on the subject they will be selecting in order to save themselves from regrets. Sometimes, students’ decisions are based on parental influence. They take subjects which their parents want them to take. This decision can cause increase in conflicts between parents and their children, and can sometimes lead to drop out of school. A student should consult their parents before taking any subject, and should listen to their advice. But make the decision based on both, their opinion and their parents’ opinion.
In some cases, students are not sure which majors they want to do in the future. In this case, I would advise them to take different subjects which are related to different fields, so that they may experience different flavors and can select their majors based on knowledge, rather than emotion.
