What trait do you think best describes a leader and why? by Alexis - December 2021 Scholarship Essay

Leader is the one who leads, guides, directs and influences the group. The leader knows the pulse of the group arrayed behind them and they can easily maneuver the group to achieve the goal that they set before them. When the group is unable to discover a solution through other means, they resort to the leader for assistance. The leader meets their needs at the time. It is in this context that leadership gains importance. A leader with a positive outlook, passionate about their ideas and goals and outstanding qualities would be able to take the group to the path of success; similarly, a leader with negative aptitude would easily steer their followers to a destructive end.
They must be aware of where their team is and where it needs to go. They must also understand each team member's tasks and responsibilities, as well as how they fit into the larger picture or objective..Usually, they can see beyond the ambiguity and challenges of today to an empowering picture of tomorrow. Fueled by inspiration, they create a sense of hope for the future. A better way is just around the corner. They feel the urge to succeed in their bones and want their other individuals to share that feeling with them. This feeling cannot be required nor forced, it’s solely gained by trust. One of the leadership responsibilities is to hold the end picture in mind as a discipline, but it takes commitment each day.
Being part of a women’s mentoring group, Ladies of Futurity, taught me that I didn’t understand my community until I was forced to see it from a different perspective. More importantly, being president of this organization has prepared me when faced with challenges. While it may be difficult, you always have to stick with your morals and do what is right.
I have had the opportunities to display the spirit of leadership in organizing a few events aiming at community services. Whether it was volunteering at soup kitchens, volunteering at the library, cleaning parks or beaches, it was very difficult to get the people motivated to do such services. A lot of struggle, patience and a strong commitment are required to pursue the group members to reach the goal. Even if I had to face at times a recession of zeal and enthusiasm in my group members while organizing such group events, but, with my strong belief, commitment and determination I motivated such members to do their best in achieving the common goal set before us. Leadership qualities are very important to me because they make me different from others.
