A leader, who me? by Alexandria - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

Many of us float through High School just waiting on our teachers to tell us what to do next. We follow the rules, do our work, stay out of trouble, and mange to get along just fine. However, once we take the big leap to move out of our cozy nest at home and go off to college all of this changes! It is time to "wake up and smell the coffee"! I can't imagine thinking I was going off to college and not feel that I had not been given some leadership skills to prepare me for college. These skills are required not only to lead yourself (get up and make it to class, keep your dorm room clean, and register for classes), but also to work with others and live coherently together. Yes, leadership skills are critical for college! You can't possibly earn your wings and fly if you cannot lead yourself down the path to success.

It is also necessary in order to lead others. Perhaps you become president of your sorority or you work in a lab to prove a theory. You will need core leadership skills to take your group to the next level on campus. By being a leader, you will also be able to persuade others to think as you do about a certain topic. This could be helpful it deciding where to take a missionary trip or what service project is most needed on campus. Yes, when I think about going off to college and the excitement mounts within me, I am proud of the leadership skills I have learned in High School and know they will serve me well as I enter the next chapter of my life.
