from playing to representing by Alexandria - March 2020 Scholarship Essay
Growing up I had multiple passions. I loved going to the beach, playing sports and, debating with anyone that was willing to step up for a challenge. Throughout middle school, I always believed that I wanted to be a marine biologist and focus on the conservation of ecosystems and, work with protecting animal rights. Unfortunately, with the more career research projects I had as assignments in school, I personally felt that this would not be the best when considering my future goals. I wanted a job that not only fulfilled my passion but, I also want to be able to start/ raise a family without financials being a main concern.
During my sophomore year in high school, I was introduced to a class known as AICE General Paper. In this class we were primarily asked to review world issues and debate within an essay our perspectives, providing evidence to consolidate our side. This is where I started to formulate the idea of becoming a lawyer. I felt that this would fit my love for a debate and, I would not be concerned about a lack of money. After truly looking into the steps and, realizing what would have to be done and, thinking about the college life I would not be living, I decided that this might not be the best career for myself either.
Towards the end of my Junior year, I came to a realization that I needed to strongly consider my future career, and make a decision. I had always heard stories about people changing their majors in college but, I wanted to have a solid plan for myself. Over the summer I decided that I wanted to major in Sports management. With this major I will be able to take multiple pathways just in case one falls through but, as a final career, I would like to be a sports agent. When working my way to be a sports agent I will be able to start off with a college program for sports business/ management specifically. I am currently undecided with where I am going to school but, I have been accepted to multiple schools with strong programs such as Saint Leo University. While studying in college, I plan to apply and hopefully intern for a position with a local professional organization such as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Tampa bay Lightning or, The Tampa Bay Rays. While working as an intern, I will be introduced to the field where I will learn about the business side of athletics and, I will be able to create connections before I graduate college. During college I will also need to take courses such as economics, sports law and, general business classes.
After college when I graduate with my Bachelors in Sports management, I will be able to continue my road to becoming a sports agent by taking the Athletic Agent test, required in most states. Depending on which organization I will an agent for, I will need to test for that as well. After I pass, I will be able to truly start off my career. It is possible for a sports agent to spend up to eight years in schooling and internships before truly starting off their career. When planning my ten year career plan, I will save the last two years to strengthen my reputation and, possibly start my own company.
