My Interests in Dentistry and Their Power to Change Communities and Individuals by Alexandra - June 2020 Scholarship Essay

Most children in elementary school despised going to the dentist, but I loved it. A trip to the dentist was (is) delightful; staff members smiled at me, hygienists inquired my life, and I received a sticker at the end! How could anyone fear such kindhearted people? I thought. Perhaps I can defeat clients’ fears of dentist visits.
Enhancing others’ self-confidence drives my interest in dentistry. Ranging from tissue grafts, trauma surgery, dental implants, laser surgery or braces, dental services make patients feel satisfied with their smiles. As a dentist, I will improve people’s quality of life.
Specializing in dental services allows one to learn endlessly—I love this about dentistry. Some specialized procedures are performed for esthetic purposes; others are performed for serious deformities caused by diseases or accidents. As a dentist, not only could I better a client’s appearance, I could also remedy a client’s dental damage. Also, infections like untreated tooth abscesses may be life-threatening; therefore, my work would be life-saving. Orthodontics and dental anesthesiology particularly fascinate me. Unlike many of my peers, I never wore braces; my slight knowledge of braces makes me eager to work on and assess patients with them. Additionally, dental anesthesiologists must guarantee patient safety and ensure access to care for both young patients and those with specific health care needs. In this practice, I would aid individuals that need special care.
Along with youth and specific health care patients, people of all ages, personalities, and ethnicities walk into a dentist’s office. Moreover, minority groups strongly demand dentists. Working with minorities as a dentist would improve their community’s health and open me to diverse cultures. Women’s opportunities in dentistry are flourishing, too; I anticipate joining these brilliant females.
Dentists may control when and where they work. Family is a part of me and working in dentistry lets me spend plenty of time with them. Dentistry also occurs in various settings: private practices, research facilities, teaching, and more. I aim to open my own dental practice.
