If I Could Give a Speech... by Alexandra - March 2017 Scholarship Essay
In the fast and complex world of school, many matters are brought up in the lives of every student that must be addressed. Some may relate to a vast majority of student populations, while others only apply to certain individuals. Nonetheless, a topic that I am sure is considered very important to many is that of respect. As a student, I hear about respect all of the time. However, time given for an explanation as to why or how respect is vital is usually short or cliché. For any student respect is found in virtually every aspect of life, such as friends, fellow students, teachers, family, and especially yourself.
When it comes to friends and fellow students, respect involves issues ranging from being dependable and trustworthy to avoiding bullying or socially isolating someone. No one wants to be around a person who is ill-mannered. Let alone someone whom you call “friend”. Being considerate and appreciative of those around us aids in creating strong bonds with others who may in turn reciprocate those actions. In schools, diversity is inevitable. Varying cultures, lifestyles, hobbies, likes, dislikes, dress, speech, and personalities encompasses and defines student life. Learning to accept and respect differences will allow for a much more peaceful environment than what is common in most schools.
As for our teachers and family members, respect is essential if we are to reach goals in a way that is beneficial for us. Family is there to support endeavors during a student’s career, while teachers guide and encourage students to achieve as much as they can. These simple facts alone entail a degree of respect. Unfortunately, in our day having a discourteous attitude toward those in authority is rampant. Solid relationships with anyone is based primarily on a level of respect, and having people who truly care about the success of their students has proved to be so important. In effect, including this quality in and outside of school is required from both sides. Not only does this benefit students academically, but it paves the way for healthy communication and a pleasant atmosphere for both teachers and family.
The most crucial facet of this topic that I would like to address to every student that I could possibly reach would be to hold oneself in the highest of respects. No matter the gender, race, or background, having a measure of self respect is one of the single most significant things a student can have. It comprises of many factors such as being able to handle responsibilities, working hard, putting forth time and effort, and having a positive view of all endeavors; these are imperative to the accomplishment and well-being of every student. Along these lines, having self-respect also involves accepting and being satisfied with oneself. There are so many kids who feel as though they are unworthy or too incompetent to attempt to achieve much of anything during their time in school. On the other hand, students may allow themselves to be sucked into habits that are potentially detrimental to their future and can even have lasting effects. From my experience, this dilemma can be solved if the relevant subject of respect is brought to their attention.
If I ever got the chance to deliver a speech to a school-wide audience, I would not hesitate to use the opportunity to explain why having and showing respect will only help accelerate and improve the life of everyone, especially in an educational setting. No matter how often people talk about it or how many times the phrase “show some respect!” can be used, this is a topic that I believe must be heard by every student that can be reached.
