The Need for Computer Science in High School by Alexander - August 2015 Scholarship Essay

In today’s fast-paced society, we rely on technology more than ever before; however, American high schools are not adequately preparing students for these changes. Computer science is the driving force behind all of the smartphones that so many take for granted, but most cannot write simple code. Some high schools have made computer science classes optional, but all should require it. Many colleges require some form of computer science class, but many have never seen a line of code before. This can insight panic in some. Computer Science is one of the most valuable skills employers are looking for in the work force today.

When a multi-billionaire expresses the importance of computer science and coding, one would think that people would try to learn this skill, but this is not the case. Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, and Mark Zuckerberg have all said that coding is an invaluable skill to have, but yet knowing this skill is “not cool.” But what is so uncool about having a great job that pays well? Many people will say that “I could never learn how to code,” and those people are wrong. Coding is not a mythical talent that only the smartest can learn, everyone has the ability to code.

Computer Science is important for more than just coding. Knowing computer science makes you think in a different way. Many times, you have to think outside of the box to obtain a solution. Even though computer science is categorized as math or science, there is never just one solution to a problem; this is what makes coding such a great asset to have. Two people can create a solution, that are both equally valid, that look nothing alike. A Coding mindset gives the ability to solve any problem in a unique way.

I had never taken a computer science class before college and I wish I could have had the opportunity. My school never offered any classes on coding. I would love to see my high school offer a computer science class in the near future because of the great impact that it will have on the students.
