LEADERSHIP A GOAL FOR COLLEGE AND LIFE SUCCESS by Alexander - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

I believe that leadership skills are absolutely necessary for college success. In fact I believe leadership skills are a necessary life skill and it is my life goal to be considered a great leader one day.

I am considered a leader on the baseball field, in fact at last night’s game; it was during the bottom of the seventh inning, there were two outs; and we needed to win this game but it looked like some of my teammates were losing their focus. That’s when I realized at that moment the team needed a leader on the mound. My team gathered around the mound looking tense but a quick speech by me calmed most of the players down and we are ready to carry on with the game.

Being a leader on my team isn't easy work. I must know when to speak and what to say and when to act and take matters into my own hands. Being an effective leader requires the combination of several skills and could be the difference between winning and losing. My team rallied last night, we won the game. I was able to unite a group of people and help them achieve the win. It was a game people will be talking about for a while.

In sports as in history and in life in general people remember the leaders because leaders are the ones who have the greatest impact. From the battlefield to the baseball field a leader is needed to unite, rally and drive a group of people to victory. This is why I believe leadership skills are necessary for college and for life.

I've always been a big believer that higher education will helps one achieve their goals, the more education one has, the more self-confident they are and self-confidence is a trait of great leaders. Being able to attend a University, a community filled with people who embrace leadership like I do, has always been my goal, to be with like minded peers and to be pushed not only to succeed but to strive as one of the top leaders in my class. I believe a college education will further empower me to handle the challenges that are needed to excel as a student and a leader and with these skills I will truly be able to contribute to my community and my country at large.
